Septic System Do's
- Do learn the location of your septic tank and drainfield.
- Do have your septic pumped out by a licensed pumper, approximately every three years, or as often as is appropriate for your system.
- Do keep your septic tank lid accessible for inspections and pumpings! Install risers if necessary.
- Do divert other sources of water, such as roof drains or sump pumps away from the septic system. Allowing excessive water into your septic system will create an overload for your drainfield.
- Do contact a septic contractor whenever you experience problems with your system. Early intervention may save the septic system from failing prematurely!
Septic System Don'ts
- Don’t allow anyone to drive or park over any part of the system, this could result in damage to your system.
- Don’t plant anything over or near the drainfield except for grass. Roots from nearby trees or shrubs may cause clogs and damage to drainlines.
- Don’t dig in your drainfield or build anything over it. Don’t cover the drain field with concrete or asphalt, the area over the drainfield should only have grass covering it.
- Don’t use septic tank additives. Most of these products do not help your system and can often cause more harm than good.
- Don’t allow backwash from home water softeners to enter into the septic system. This will cause an overload to your septic system.
- Don’t use your toilet as a trash can or pour harmful chemicals and cleaners down the drain. Harsh chemicals can kill the beneficial bacteria that treat your wastewater.
- Keep Kitchen greases out of the septic system. It is not easily broken down and can clog your drain field. There are no available solvents to dissolve these oils that are legal to the groundwater.
